Breakfast & Café in Vienna's 4th District: Wiedner Hauptstraße

Wiedner Hauptstraße is the main street of Vienna's 4th district (Wieden). It starts at Karlsplatz and runs south through the neighbourhood – trams, bakeries, apartment houses and cafés in between. If you are looking for breakfast in Vienna 1040, sooner or later you end up here.

MORGEN 1040 is at Wiedner Hauptstraße 71, between Karlsplatz and the main station (Hauptbahnhof). This guide tells you what to expect, what it costs, when we are open and how to get here – and why the neighbourhood is worth a walk after breakfast.

What MORGEN 1040 is

A café and bistro for all-day breakfast, brunch and specialty coffee. The most important thing in one sentence: breakfast is served during the whole opening time, daily 8 am–4 pm – Saturdays and Sundays included.

The coffee comes from GOTA Coffee Experts, a Viennese specialty roastery. Bread and rolls are baked by Felzl, a Viennese bakery. The fruit spreads are made by Unverschwendet from rescued fruit. Oat, soy and almond milk come at no extra charge. Dogs are warmly welcome.

The menu: breakfast all day

Eggs your way. Scrambled eggs or a three-egg omelette with Felzl sourdough, butter and salad (7,90 €). Eggs Benedict with poached eggs, bacon and hollandaise (13,90 €).

Toasts. Avocado Toast Classic with guacamole and cherry tomatoes (10,90 €), with feta and rocket (11,90 €) or with smoked salmon, spinach, hollandaise and egg (13,90 €). Burrata toast with pistachios and honey (13,90 €).

Breakfast plates. Vienna Breakfast with croissant, organic roll, butter, jam, egg, ham and cheese (13,90 €). Oriental Breakfast with guacamole, hummus, falafel and olives (11,90 €). Shakshuka (12,90 €).

Sweet. Pancakes with fruit or bacon (11,90 €), brioche French toast with mascarpone, vegan waffle with fruit and chocolate sauce (13,90 €). Croissants from 2,90 €, homemade cake 4,90 €.

Bowls and salads. Acai Power Bowl (12,90 €), Yogurt & Granola Bowl (11,90 €), goat cheese salad and burrata salad ( each).

Coffee. Espresso 3,20 €, cappuccino 4,50 €, flat white 5,40 €, café latte 5,40 €. Plus matcha, tea, lemonades, Fritz-Kola and – for Sundays – a mimosa (7,50 €).

Drinks beyond coffee

The drinks menu goes further than espresso and cappuccino. Matcha comes as Iced Matcha (5,70 €) and Special Latte Matcha (6,50 €); chai latte is 5,20 €, hot chocolate 5,90 €. Organic teas – Earl Grey, Japan Sencha, chamomile, mint, berry – 4,20 € each. Protein shakes with oat milk (matcha, peanut butter cup, cereal) 6,50 €. Cold: homemade lemonade and coconut water 5,90 € each, raspberry soda 4,50 €, Fritz-Kola in six varieties 4,20 €, Pago juices 4,20 €. And for the weekend: Hochriegel sparkling wine 0.2 l 5,20 €, mimosa 7,50 €, Trumer Pils or Zwickl 4,60 €, Radler 4,40 €.

Extras to combine

The menu is built so you can put your own breakfast together. Extras go with any egg dish or toast: avocado or guacamole 3,00 €, a poached, soft-boiled or fried egg 2,00 €, feta 2,50 €, smoked salmon 4,00 €, bacon 3,00 €, hummus 3,00 €, spinach 2,00 €, bread basket 2,90 €. So an omelette (7,90 €) with salmon and avocado costs exactly the sum of its parts – and you know it before you order.

Who MORGEN is for

The neighbourhood first: if you live in Wieden, this is your table in the morning. The TU Wien crowd at Karlsplatz, which fills the area on weekdays. Travellers from the main station who want something better than the station hall. Dog owners who don't have to sit outside. And everyone who still wants breakfast at two on a Sunday – because that is what Sundays are for.

Opening hours and reservations

daily 8 am–4 pm. A table can be booked online in a minute – confirmation comes by email. Walking in without a reservation is just as fine; for larger groups we look for the right table personally.

How to get here

• Tram: lines D and 1, plus the Badner Bahn – all stop close to Wiedner Hauptstraße 71.
• On foot from Karlsplatz: about a quarter of an hour along Wiedner Hauptstraße.

The neighbourhood after breakfast

Wieden is one of Vienna's smallest and most central districts, and everything is close. Within a few minutes of the café you reach:

• Karlskirche and Resselpark at Karlsplatz – baroque dome, a pond, lawns to sit on in summer.
• Schleifmühlgasse with galleries, design shops and small stores.
• Naschmarkt along the Wienzeile – Vienna's best-known market, right on the border with the 6th district.
• Belvedere with its gardens and Klimt – a walk towards the east.
• TU Wien at Karlsplatz – which is why the neighbourhood is full of students on weekdays.
